Help 3D Percussion raise $2,500 to commission percussion trio works by Zihan Wu and Soomin Kim for our ‘25/’26 Program Imprints!

Imprints aims to break down the very essence of percussion music and put it back together in about 60 minutes. When we say that something sounds percussive, usually we mean that it is a short sound. It is true that percussionists work very hard to create the illusion of sustain since the majority of our instruments make short sounds. This fundamental characteristic of percussion is in some ways related to slow shutter speed photography often featuring elongated cars with blurred lights on a busy highway: One image captures several short moments in time. We have entitled our project Imprints because slow shutter speed blurring moving objects made us think about how every movement or development in history leaves a footprint and becomes a legacy in the long run. We are aiming to explore the history of percussion from conventional styles to pieces that use technology and extended techniques.

3D’s goal is to commission six new works for percussion trio that explore the metaphor of shutter speed as it relates to percussion. Not only will each piece share the central theme of shutter speed, but the program will also follow a narrative arc from thesis through antithesis to synthesis. Beginning with familiar percussive sounds and musical material, the program will gradually incorporate more experimental ideas extending all the way to today’s cutting edge technology: live electronics in Omar Carmenates’ Sidechained. The program will culminate in an ambitious and show-stopping new work by Michael Burritt

We hope you will support us in raising $2,500 by January 2nd to commission Zihan Wu and Soomin Kim for our first and fourth numbers. We have already covered the commissioning fees for the second and third pieces by Ash Graham and Emma Cardon, Omar Carmenates’ work is a donation, and we are planning a consortium to fund Michael Burritt’s new piece. We will apply for grants to cover recording costs. We are well on our way to making this program a reality and we hope you will support us the rest of the way!
